Sue's Blog Questions

Sue:

You asked two questions.

OK, so how do you put a picture in a comment?

Now, how do I get an e-mail reply when I subscribe to a post? How do I subscribe to a post?

Picture Question

First, comments are not posts. If you want to put up a picture, make a post.

Blogs are not email; and they are not bulletin boards. Email is like a written phone call. A bulletin board is a place for public messages. Not everyone can join a board. On a board, a few people control all communication.

Blogs are essentially monologues that can support public discussions. There are two kinds of link that provide this support. Permanent links and back links.

The permanent link allows someone out on the net to provide a link to a single post of your blog and its comments. The back link (Blog This) is created by another blogger on your blog. It places a snippet of your post on his blog and a link back to his blog in your post. You can control the back links on your blog. He controls the links on his blog.

Thus a public conversation can occur between any number of parties without a moderator.

Subscription Question

Supporting email subscriptions is a huge waste of resources for a heavily visited website.

The subscription refers to RSS feeds. I have attempted to tell you about them for sometime. The time is rapidly approaching when emailed news letters by subscription will diminish. You will need a ''News Aggregator" or "Feed Reader."

A feed is an electronic copy of the current index of your recent posts and contains a brief description the of post and its permanent link.

To subscribe to the feed, you tell your "Feed Reader" to retrieve a copy of the index; and it gives you a searchable list of recent posts. It usually has features that allow you to scan and retrieve large quantities of items. See: The Boca Beagle Website.

Sue:

See if you can use "My AOL."
This blog provides an ATOM feed.
